Eighteen men from Quincy, Massachusetts have achieved the rank of general in the United States military. In September 2021, Quincy recognized their achievements and paid special tribute to seven of them – considered modern-day patriots. Five living generals -- Joseph Dunford, James McConville, Gordon Sullivan, Ronald Rand, and Francis McGinn -- were honored in person, and two were honored posthumously – Charles Sweeney and Stephen O’Keefe.
On September 10, 2021 at “An Evening with the Generals,” Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch paid tribute to all seven generals, displayed their official portraits, and honored their families for the sacrifices they made. Mayor Koch passed out miniature busts of the seven generals in anticipation of the unveiling of the statues and busts at the Generals Bridge & Park dedication the next day.
